Kavi Makes a Bouncing Ball Move

Kavi drew a ball near the top of the page. "How do I make it move?" Kavi wondered. So Kavi drew the ball again, a little lower. Then again, lower still — one picture at a time. Each picture is a frame. When Kavi lined up all the frames and played them fast, one after another, the ball looked like it was bouncing! "That is an animation," Kavi hooted. Later, Kavi picked up a camera and filmed a short clip of a real bird hopping — "and that is a video!" Last of all, Kavi pressed Save so nothing was lost.

What your child will learn

1What makes pictures moveAn animation is made of many still pictures shown quickly, one after another. Each still picture is a frame. Tap each part to hear its job.
2Two ways to make things moveBoth animation and video show movement on a screen — but they are made in different ways. One is built from pictures you make; the other is filmed with a camera.
3How to make a short animationMaking an animation is a little program — steps in order. Press ▶ Run and watch Kavi build a bouncing-ball animation frame by frame.
