Kavi Searches for Owls

Kavi typed how do owls fly and tapped search. In a blink, a long list of pages appeared — and one sat right at the top. "Why is that one first?" Kavi wondered. The search engine had looked through thousands of web pages and put the ones it thought were most helpful near the top. That ordering is called ranking. "So first means the engine guessed it fits best," Kavi nodded. But the very first spot had a little Ad label, and the next page said something Kavi knew was wrong. "First is a good place to start," said Kavi, "but it isn't always the truest. I'll read a few and check who made them!"

What your child will learn

1What search ranking meansWhen you search, the engine looks through many web pages and puts the ones it thinks are most helpful near the top. That ordering is called ranking. Tap each part to hear its job.
2The top result: a good start, not the final wordThe search engine ranks pages by what it guesses is most helpful — but first does not always mean truest. Some top spots are paid adverts, and popular is not the same as correct. So we still check. Tap each card to compare.
3The very first result has an 'Ad' labelKavi searches for a good owl book. The very top result has a small Ad label — someone paid to put it there. Predict whether that makes it the best answer, then reveal.
