Kavi and the Flashing Trap

Kavi opened a favourite game, and a box flashed up: "YOU WON A GOLDEN OWL! Hurry — tap in 5 seconds!" Kavi's wing hovered. Then he stopped and thought like a detective. "Wait. Did I ever enter a contest? No. So how could I win? And why is it rushing me?" Kavi smiled. "Two clues — too good to be true, and it's rushing me. That's a trick." He closed the box and told Grandma Owl. "Clever," she hooted. "Adverts and tricks all leave clues. If you ask the right questions, you can spot the trick every time — and stay in charge of your own screen."

What your child will learn

1Four questions that catch a trickYou don't have to just feel that something is a trick — you can think it through. Ask these four questions about anything on the screen. Tap each one to see why it works.
2Trick, or the real thing?Run each one through your four questions. If it wants something, rushes you, or is too good to be true, it's a trick or advert. If it's the thing you chose, it's real content. Tap the right box.
3Two clues at once — what is it?A pop-up jumps up while Kavi plays. Use your four questions before you reveal — more than one clue can point to a trick at the same time.

A peek inside

A pop-up says Kavi won a new bike, but he never entered any contest. Using logic, is it real?
you can't win a contest you never entered — that's too good to be true
