Kavi and the Flashing Prize

Kavi opened a favourite cartoon online. But before it played, a bright box flashed across the screen: "YOU WON! Tap NOW for a free golden owl!" Kavi's wing hovered over it. "A prize? For me?" Just in time, Grandma Owl leaned in. "Wait, little one — look closely. That box isn't the cartoon you came for. It is an advert — a message someone made to get you to tap and buy or sign up." Kavi tilted. "How can I tell?" "An advert wants something from you — it shouts Buy!, Free!, Tap here!, or shows a price. The real content is the cartoon, the game, the story you chose. Learn to spot the difference," said Grandma, "and you stay in charge of your own screen."

What your child will learn

1How to spot an advertAn advert (ad) is a message made to get you to buy, tap, or sign up for something. It often gives itself away with clues. Tap each clue to see what it means.
2The advert, and the thing you came forAn advert and the real content are not the same. One wants to sell to you; the other is what you chose to watch, read, or play. Tap each card to compare.
3Advert, or real content? Some things on the screen are adverts trying to sell. Others are the real content you came for. Tap the right box for each one.
4You tap the "free prize" — what happens?A flashing box says Kavi won a free golden owl and shouts "Tap now!" Predict what tapping it would really do, then reveal.

A peek inside

Kavi asks, "What exactly is an advert?" How would you explain it?
an advert is a message made to get you to buy or tap — not the thing you came for

Try this at home: A message made to get you to buy or tap something is called an ____.
