Kavi's Big Data Project

"Today we are data detectives!" Kavi hooted, holding up a clipboard. "I want to know how our class comes to school." First Kavi collected the data — asking each friend and making a mark for every answer. Then Kavi made a chart — one bar for each way, as tall as its count. Finally Kavi reported what the chart showed: "Most of us walk!" A real data project goes in three steps: collect the counts, chart them as bars, then report what the data tells you.

What your child will learn

1Collect, then chart, then reportA data project has three steps in order. First you collect the counts, then you chart them as bars, then you report what the data shows. Press Run to watch the project go step by step.
2Tally each vote into its boxTo collect data, you take each answer and put a mark in the right box. Here are votes for the class's favourite snack. Tap the right box for each vote so every answer is counted.
3Turn the counts into barsOnce the data is collected, you chart it. Draw one bar for each way, and make each bar as tall as its count. Now the class data is easy to see at a glance.
4What does the data show? The last step is to report — to say in words what the chart shows. Look back at the bars: walk 8, bus 5, car 3, bike 2. Predict what Kavi should report, then reveal.

A peek inside

Kavi asks the class and gets these votes for favourite fruit: apple, apple, banana, apple, grapes. How many chose apple?
collect means count each answer — apple appears three times in the votes
