Kavi's Messy Pile of Scores

Kavi wrote down everyone's game scores on little cards: 7, 2, 9, 4, 1 — all in a jumbled pile. "Who won? I can't tell!" Kavi hooted, shuffling the cards. Then Kavi had an idea: "What if I put them in order?" Kavi laid them out from smallest to biggest: 1, 2, 4, 7, 9. In a blink it was clear — the biggest score, 9, sat right at the end! "When I sort my data, I can see it," Kavi cheered. Sorting means putting data in order — smallest to biggest, or A to Z — so you can read it at a glance and find things fast.

What your child will learn

1A jumbled pile, or data in order? The same numbers can be a messy pile or a tidy line. When data is sorted — put in order — it is much easier to read. Tap each card to compare.
2Small number, or big number? One way to sort data is to put it into groups. Here a number under 5 is a small number, and 5 or more is a big number. Tap the right box for each one.
3Sorted smallest to biggestWhen you sort numbers from smallest to biggest, the smallest is at the front and the biggest is at the end. Predict where the biggest score sits, then reveal.

A peek inside

Kavi's scores are jumbled: 7, 3, 9, 1. Put them in order from smallest to biggest.
start with the smallest (1), then the next smallest (3), then 7, then the biggest (9)

Try this at home: Putting data in order so it is easy to read is called ___.
