Kavi's Roads and Libraries

Kavi drew a big map. "These lines are roads that join every house and town," said Kavi. "And these little buildings are libraries I can visit by driving on the roads." Then Kavi grinned. "The internet is just like the roads — the big network that joins all the devices. The web is like the libraries — the sites and pages I open on it!" But the roads carry more than library trips: mail trucks and phone calls use them too. "So the internet carries the web — and also video-calls and email. The web is just one thing riding on the internet!"

What your child will learn

1The network, or the sites on it?The internet is the big network that joins all the devices — like the roads that connect everywhere. The web is the sites and pages you open in a browser — like the libraries you visit by travelling the roads. Tap each card to compare.
2Is it the web, or something else on the internet? The web is the sites and pages you open in a browser. But the internet also carries other things that are not the web — like video-calls and email. Tap the right box for each one.
3The roads close — can you reach the library? The internet is like the roads; the web is like the libraries you visit on them. Predict what happens to the web if the internet stops, then reveal.
