Kavi Draws the Counts

Kavi had counted the class's favourite pets: dogs 6, cats 4, fish 2. But a long list was hard to see. "What if I draw each count as a tall block?" Kavi hooted. So Kavi made one bar for each pet — the bigger the count, the taller the bar. In a blink the tallest bar jumped out: dogs! "Now anyone can tell at a glance," Kavi cheered. A picture of counts drawn as bars is a bar chart. Count, then draw a bar for each — taller means more.

What your child will learn

1One bar for each groupA bar chart turns counts into bars. There is one bar for each group, and each bar is as tall as its count. The taller the bar, the bigger the number — so the tallest bar was chosen the most.
2Turn the data into a bar chartFirst you collect data — the counts. Then you draw a bar for each count. The same numbers become easy to see. Tap each card to compare.
3More apples than pearsA taller bar always means a bigger count. Read the counts, picture the bars, then reveal to check.
4Does this count make a tall bar?The bigger the count, the taller the bar. Here a count of 5 or more makes a tall bar, and fewer than 5 makes a short bar. Tap the right box for each count.
