Kavi and the Stepping Stones

Kavi hopped across the river on stepping stones: flat, round, flat, round, flat, round… "Wait — I can see it!" Kavi hooted. "It keeps repeating: flat, round, flat, round." So Kavi didn't have to guess the next stone — it had to be flat. Hop! It was. When something repeats in the same order, that is a pattern. Once you spot the pattern, you can predict what comes next — and solve the whole puzzle without checking every piece. That is how good thinkers (and computers!) work fast.

What your child will learn

1Red, blue, red, blue… what next?A pattern is something that repeats in the same order. When you can see what keeps repeating, you can predict the next one without guessing. Look at the tiles, then reveal.
2Patterns live in numbers tooNumbers can make a pattern as well. Say these out loud: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 … What is the rule? Each number is 2 more than the one before. Once you know the rule, you can predict the next number.
3Guess every step, or spot the pattern? You could check every single piece one by one — slow and easy to get stuck. Or you could spot the pattern and jump straight to the answer. Tap each card to compare.

A peek inside

Kavi sees beads on a string: ⭐ 🌙 ⭐ 🌙 ⭐ … What comes next?
the beads repeat star, moon, star, moon — after a star comes a moon

Try this at home: A ____ is something that repeats in the same order.
