Kavi Draws a Map for the Robot

Kavi's little robot wanted to reach the acorn across the grid — but it didn't know the way! "I'll give it a path," said Kavi. "A path is just steps in the right order: forward, turn, forward, pick up!" Kavi lined up the steps like a tiny map. Press Run — and the robot followed every step, all the way to the acorn. "Putting steps in order to reach a goal is called programming a path," hooted Kavi.

What your child will learn

1Each path step does one jobA path is made of two kinds of step. A move step sends the robot to a new square. A turn step points it a new way but keeps it on the same square. Tap the right box for each.
2A path is steps in the right orderTo program a path, put the steps in order — each one the robot can do. Read them top to bottom, then press Run and watch the robot follow the path to the acorn.
3Where does this path end?A good coder reads the whole path before pressing Run. The robot faces up and moves 1 square per step. Read the path, picture it, then reveal.

A peek inside

The robot must reach a flag that is 1 square ahead, then 1 square to its right. Give the path as steps.
forward gets it ahead, then turn to face right, then forward again

Try this at home: Putting steps in order so a robot reaches a goal is called programming a ____.
