Kavi Asks the Class
"What is everyone's favourite fruit?" asked Kavi. Hands went up all at once — too fast to remember! So Kavi made one little mark for every answer: 🍎 apple, mark! 🍌 banana, mark! A mark for each answer is a tally. Every fifth mark goes across the group of four to make a neat bundle of 5, so big numbers are easy to count. "Ask, then tally," Kavi hooted. "Now I can see exactly how many!"

What your child will learn
1One mark for each oneA tally is a quick way to count. You make one mark for each thing. Every fifth mark crosses the group, making a bundle of 5 that is easy to count. Tap each one to hear it.
2Ask, then tally the answersKavi asked the class, "What is your favourite fruit?" and made a tally mark for every answer. Count each row of marks to see how many chose it. The tallest count was chosen the most.
3How many marks? To read a tally, count a bundle of 5 first, then add the single marks after it. Read the clue, say the number in your head, then reveal to check.
4Is it a full bundle of 5?A bundle of 5 has four marks with one crossing them. Count the marks. Is it a full bundle of 5, or fewer than 5? Tap the right box.
