Kavi's Call Won't Go

Kavi tapped to video-call Grandma Owl far across the sea — but the screen just spun and spun. "Why won't it go?" Kavi hooted. The little internet light was off. "Oh! We are offline — not joined to the internet right now." Kavi could still draw a picture and play a saved game. Then — ping! — the light came on. "Now we are online!" The call rang, and Grandma waved. Online means joined to the internet and able to reach far away. Offline means not joined — the device still works, but it can't reach the internet.

What your child will learn

1Joined to the internet, or not?A device is online when it is connected to the internet, and offline when it is not. Offline, the device still works for things saved on it — but it can't reach far away. Tap each card to compare.
2Needs the internet, or works offline? Some things only work when you are online. Others work even offline, because they are already on the device. Tap the right box for each one.
3The internet is off — will the call go?Kavi's device is offline right now — not joined to the internet. Predict whether the video-call to far-away Grandma will connect, then reveal.
