group a pile of things into clear groups by one feature — the same colour, the same size, or the same shape

📖
Kavi's Messy Button Jar
Kavi tipped over the button jar and buttons went everywhere! Red ones, blue ones, big ones, tiny ones — all mixed up. "Oof," said Kavi. "To find anything, I need to sort." Sorting means putting things that are alike into the same group. Kavi picked one feature first — colour — and made a red pile and a blue pile. Suddenly the mess made sense. "A computer loves tidy groups too," Kavi hooted. "Let's sort!"

What your child will learn
1Put the same colour togetherSorting means picking one feature and putting the things that match into the same group. Here the feature is colour. Tap Red or Blue for each button.
2Now sort by SIZEThe same things can be sorted a different way — just pick a new feature. This time the feature is size: is it big or small? One pile of things, many ways to group.
3Which group does it join? Before we sort, we choose the one feature we care about. If the feature is shape — round things — predict where the ball goes, then reveal.
🔍
A peek inside
Kavi has a 🍋 lemon, a 🍌 banana, and a 🫐 blueberry. Kavi sorts by colour. Which two go in the yellow group?
lemon = yellow, banana = yellow, blueberry = blue
Try this at home: Sorting means putting things that are ___ into the same group.
