Kavi Says It Three Ways

"Words on a page are quiet," said Kavi. "Your voice brings them to life — and I do three things. First I stress the key word: say "I didn't say THAT" and you hear exactly what I mean. Next I shape the tune — my voice rises ↗ for a yes/no question and falls ↘ for a statement. Last I sound the endings: the -ed in walked and the -s in asks, so no word gets swallowed. Stress, tune, endings — that's how you say it clearly!"

What your child will learn

1Kavi reads it clearlyTap each line to hear it. Listen for the three moves — the stressed word, the tune (↗ rising or ↘ falling), and the clear -ed / -s endings.
2Stress → Tune → EndingsReading aloud well is three moves at once. Stress the word that carries the meaning. Shape the tune for the kind of sentence. Sound the ending of every word.
3-ed and -s each have three soundsThe ending is small but it changes the word. Your mouth picks the sound from what comes before it — a sharp sound, a soft sound, or a whole extra beat.

A peek inside

Watch me change the meaning with my voice. I read one sentence two ways:
(a) "I didn't take it."
(b) "I didn't take it."
What does each stressed word hint?
the stressed word is the one you are correcting

Try this at home: Why does stressing a different word change what a sentence means?
