I can write in different forms such as report, review and story for a set purpose.

📖
Pick the Right Tool
"A carpenter picks the right tool for the job," said Kavi, "and a writer picks the right form. If my job is to inform, I write a report — headings and facts. If my job is to judge, I write a review — an opinion, reasons and a rating. If my job is to entertain, I write a story — a character, a problem and a resolution. First I ask: what is the job? Then I reach for the form that does it best."

What your child will learn
1Three jobs, three formsEvery piece of writing has a PURPOSE — a job to do. A REPORT informs: it gives facts, often under headings, in the present tense. A REVIEW judges: it gives an opinion, backs it with reasons, and usually adds a rating. A STORY entertains: it follows a character through a problem to a resolution, usually in the past tense. Name the job first, and the job picks the form.

3Report, review or story?
4A report vs a review of the same filmBoth cards are about the SAME film. Tap each one to see how the form changes with the job it does.

A peek inside
A piece gives facts about bees under headings, uses the present tense, and shares no opinion. Which form is it — a report, a review or a story?
facts + headings + present tense + no opinion → its job is to inform → a report
