A Good Writer Is a Good Checker

"The first draft is never the finished one," said Kavi. "Before I share my work I read it back slowly — one hunt for spelling, one for punctuation, one for grammar — and I mark every fix as I go. Little slips hide from a fast eye, so I slow right down."

What your child will learn

1Hunt one error type at a timeTo PROOFREAD is to read your writing back carefully and fix its mistakes. Don't try to catch everything at once. Read it through once for SPELLING, again for PUNCTUATION, and a third time for GRAMMAR — and mark each fix as you find it.
2Before and after a fixTap each line to hear it. The 'Before' line hides a mistake; the 'After' line is proofread and fixed.
3Spelling, punctuation or grammar?
4The same note, cleaned upBoth notes carry the SAME message. Tap each one to see what a careful proofread changes.

A peek inside

Proofread this line for SPELLING only: 'I saw a beutiful rainbow.'
read it slowly — 'beutiful' is missing an 'a'; the correct spelling is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l
