Kavi's Secret Asides

"Psst — I have a little secret to slip in," whispered Kavi. "When I drop extra information into a sentence, I fence it off with a matching pair: brackets for a quiet aside, dashes for a loud one, or commas for a smooth one. Here is the magic test — lift the aside out: My aunt, a nurse, drove me → My aunt drove me. The sentence still stands tall! Let's fence some asides together."

What your child will learn

1brackets · dashes · commas · parenthesisTap each card. A parenthesis is extra information you fence off. You can fence it three ways — each has a different tone.
2One mark before, a matching one afterFind the extra information. Wrap it in a matching pair of marks — the same type at both ends. Then test it: lift the aside out and the sentence must still make sense.
3How a parenthesis works
4Which matching pair fences the aside?Read each sentence and look at the marks around the extra information. Which pair fences it — brackets, dashes, or commas?

A peek inside

In "My aunt, a nurse, drove me to school," what is the parenthesis, and how do you know?
lift out the part between the two commas → 'My aunt drove me to school.' it still makes complete sense → 'a nurse' is the aside
