Making the Ideas Flow

"A good paragraph is not just a pile of sentences," said Kavi. "The ideas have to hold hands. I link them with little helper words — connectives like however, therefore and meanwhile, pronouns that point back to what I just named, and a few repeated key words. Use a variety of them and your writing stops jolting — it flows."

What your child will learn

1Words that link your ideasA COHESIVE DEVICE is a word or phrase that ties your ideas together so a piece of writing flows. The three main kinds are CONNECTIVES (words like however, therefore, meanwhile), PRONOUNS that point back to a noun you already named, and REPEATED KEY WORDS that keep a topic in view. Good writers VARY these devices instead of using the same one over and over.
2Link the same two ideas three waysTap each line to hear it. The two facts stay the SAME — only the linking word changes, and it changes what the link means.
3Contrast, result, or time?
4The same facts — glued togetherBoth cards tell the SAME three facts. Tap each to see what cohesive devices do to the flow.

A peek inside

Fill the gap with the best linking word: 'The path was muddy; ▢, we put on our boots.' — however, therefore, or meanwhile?
the muddy path is the REASON we put on boots → that is a result, so the link word is 'therefore'
