More Than One Paragraph

"A single paragraph is like one brick," said Kavi. "But a whole piece is a little building! It needs an opening to set it up, body paragraphs that each carry one idea, and a closing that lands it. Today we plan the whole building — not just one brick."

What your child will learn

1Opening, body, closingA long piece is not one giant paragraph — it is built in parts. An OPENING sets it up and hooks the reader. BODY paragraphs each carry just ONE idea: a topic sentence that names the idea, then supporting sentences that back it up. A CLOSING lands the piece and leaves a final thought.
2A piece about spidersTap each line to hear it. Notice the shape — an opening, two body paragraphs that each hold ONE idea, and a closing that lands it.
3Opening, body or closing?
4One long blob vs a structured pieceBoth cards hold the SAME ideas and about the same length. Tap each one to see why shape matters so much to the reader.

A peek inside

Here is a body paragraph: 'Camping is the best holiday. You sleep in a tent under the stars. You toast marshmallows on the fire. You wake up to birdsong.' Which sentence is the TOPIC sentence?
the topic sentence names the paragraph's one main idea → 'Camping is the best holiday' tells us what the whole paragraph is about; the rest support it

Try this at home: What three main parts make up a long, multi-paragraph piece?
