Kavi Weighs What He Hears

“When someone tells me something, I don't just nod,” said Kavi. “I listen to the whole idea, then I weigh it — did they give a reason or some evidence, or did they just say it? If there's no reason, I ask, ‘Why do you think that?’ Then I reply with my own reason — never just ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Weigh it, then answer with a because. That's how you listen like a thinker!”

What your child will learn

1A class talk — who backs up what they say?Tap each line to hear it. The class is talking about a school garden. As you listen, weigh each line: did the speaker give a reason or evidence — or just say it?
2Listen → weigh → respond with your OWN reasonA critical listener does three things. First, listen to the whole idea. Then weigh it: is there a reason or evidence? Then reply with your own reason — never just a bare yes or no.
3Which statements give a reason or evidence?

A peek inside

Watch me weigh what I hear. Leo says: “We should cancel reading time — it's boring.” I want to answer like a critical listener. What do I do first?
weigh it — did Leo give a reason or evidence, or just a feeling? → “boring” is a feeling, not a reason

Try this at home: Before you reply to someone's idea, what should you do first?
