Kavi Reads the Picture AND the Words

"A good reader uses two things at once," said Kavi. "The words tell the story — and a chart, a map or a timeline shows it as a picture. First read the title so you know what it is about. Then check the key (the little box that says what the colours or signs mean) and the labels along the side. Last, link the picture back to the words. Picture and text — they work as a team!"

What your child will learn

1Title → Key → Labels → link to the textBefore you answer anything, read a chart, map or timeline in the same order every time. The title says what it shows, the key explains the signs, the labels name each part — then look back at the words to see how they fit together.
2What each part is forEvery chart has the same parts. Tap each one to see its job!
3Fruit our class likes bestTitle first: this chart shows which fruit our class likes best. Each bar is a fruit; the taller the bar, the more children chose it. The number on top tells you exactly how many.
4The text and the timeline agreeTap each line to hear it. This is Kavi's morning timeline — it reads left to right, so the first step is on the left.

A peek inside

A bar chart shows: 🍎 apples = 6, 🥭 mangoes = 8, 🍇 grapes = 2. Which fruit has the tallest bar?
tallest bar = biggest number: 6, 8, 2 → 8
