Kavi Meets a New Friend

"I met my friend Nadia today, and her family celebrates in a different way from mine!" said Kavi. "When two cultures meet, I compare them kindly. First I find a like — something that is the same. Then I find a difference. And I speak for the people I actually know — I say 'in my family' or 'some people', never 'everyone' or 'all'. I never say a custom is 'weird' or that people 'always' do a thing. Different is not weird — it is just different, and that is wonderful!"

What your child will learn

2Find a like and a difference — speak kindlyWhen your culture meets another, compare it with care. Find one thing that is the same (a like) and one thing that is different. Speak only for the people you really know — say 'in my family' or 'some people', not 'everyone' or 'all'. And never call a custom 'weird' or say people 'always' do a thing.
3Kavi's day and Nadia's dayKavi makes two boxes to compare the two celebrations — kindly. Tap each box to hear what goes inside!

A peek inside

Watch me compare. My family tells stories at bedtime. My friend's family tells stories around a fire. I want to start kindly. Should I say: "We both love stories!" or "Their way is weird."?
a fair comparison starts with a like, and never says 'weird'
