Kavi's Hidden-Word Poem
"I wrote a poem and hid a word inside it!" said Kavi. "In an acrostic, the first letter of every line spells a secret word going down — read them top to bottom and you find it. In a shape poem, the words are laid out to make a picture of the thing you write about. A poem does not have to rhyme — it just has to be yours!"

What your child will learn
1Acrostic spells a word · shape poem makes a pictureAn acrostic hides a word down the FIRST letter of each line — one line for each letter, read top to bottom. A shape poem arranges its words so they form a picture of the thing you are writing about. Neither one has to rhyme.
2Read the first letter of each lineTap each line to hear it. Look at the FIRST letter of every line, from top to bottom. Together they spell a hidden word!
