Kavi the Reading Detective

Kavi the owl pulls on a tiny detective hat. "A good reader is a detective," he says. "The text does not tell you everything. It leaves clues. When I read 'She blew on her cold hands', the book never says it is cold outside — but I can infer it. An inference is a smart guess from the clues plus what I already know. And a great detective always proves it — by pointing to the exact words in the text. That proof is called a quote."

3Which are the text's words, which is your guess?
