Kavi Reads Like He Is Talking
Kavi reads a page in one jerky, word-by-word plod and sighs. "That does not sound like me talking!" he says. "Fluent reading has three parts. Accuracy — I read each word right. Pace — I go at a steady speed, not racing, not crawling. And phrasing — I read words in little groups and let the punctuation tell me where to pause. Put all three together and my reading sounds just like talking!"

What your child will learn
1Fluency = accuracy + pace + phrasingTap each part to hear what it means. A fluent reader does all three at once, so the reading sounds smooth and clear.
2Read in phrases, at a steady paceDo not read one word at a time. Group words that go together, keep a steady speed, and let the full stops and commas tell your voice where to breathe.
3Read each line in phrases, at a steady paceTap each line and read it aloud. Group the words that go together, keep a steady speed, and pause at the comma, stop and breathe at the full stop.
4Sort each reading into the right box
