Kavi and the Two Notes

Kavi the owl finds two notes on the park gate. One says, "The park opens at nine o'clock." The other shouts, "Our swings are the BEST — come now, you'll LOVE them!" "The first just tells me a fact I can check," hoots Kavi. "The second is trying to sway me! One is information, the other is persuasion — and I can tell them apart."

What your child will learn

1Information vs persuasionBoth can sound alike at first. Ask: is it trying to make me KNOW a fact, or make me DO / FEEL something? Tap each card!
2Information or persuasion? Each message might make you want to believe or buy. But is it just telling you a fact, or trying to sway you? Tap a bin for each one!
3When persuasion hides inside a 'fact'At S5, persuasion gets sneaky — it can hide inside a number or sound like a fact. Pick, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside

A poster says 'Our juice is simply the greatest — you'll love every drop!' Is that information or persuasion?
I ask: is it telling me a fact I can check, or trying to sway me? 'Simply the greatest' is an opinion, and 'you'll love every drop' aims straight at my feelings. There is no fact to check — the poster's whole job is to make me want the juice.

Questions parents ask

+What is the difference between information and persuasion?

Information tells you facts you can check — a time, a number, or what something is. Persuasion tries to sway what you think, feel, buy, or do, usually with opinions, exciting words, or pressure. Information wants you to KNOW; persuasion wants to MOVE you.

+Can a message with a number still be persuasion?

Yes. An ad that says '9 out of 10 kids love it!' sounds like information because it has a number, but its goal is to sell, the number is vague and hard to check, and it is there to sway you. A number can be used to persuade.

+How can a child tell persuasion from information?

Ask one question: is this trying to make me KNOW a fact, or make me BUY, FEEL, or AGREE? Facts you can check are information. Opinions, pressure, and feeling words ('best', 'hurry', 'you should', 'you'll love it') are clues that it is persuasion.
