Honest About Understanding

Tell the truth about what you REALLY get — can you explain it and redo it yourself? — not just whether the AI's answer is on your page.

I can be honest about what I really understand.

Kavi and the Clever Answer

An AI helps Kavi the owl with a tricky question. Her answer looks clever — but a friend asks, "Can you explain it?" Kavi stops. One part she can explain in her own words. One part she can't — she only copied it. "Having the answer isn't the same as understanding it," hoots Kavi. "So I'll say the true thing: this part I get, this part I don't yet."

What your child will learn

1Do I understand it — or just have the answer? The AI's answer can be right on your page and still not be in your head. Only one of these means you really understand. Tap each card!
2Do I understand it, or not yet?Drop each one in the right box. Understand means you can explain it and redo it. Not yet means you only have the answer. Tap a box for each!
3Be honest — do you understand it?Read what really happened, then pick the honest answer — the true one, not the one that just looks good. Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside

An AI explained how clouds make rain, and now you can explain it in your own words and draw it yourself. Your teacher asks, "Do you understand it?" What is the honest answer?
Can I explain it in my own words? Yes. Can I redo it — draw it — without the AI? Yes. So the idea really is in my head. The honest answer is yes.

Try this at home: How can you tell if you REALLY understand something, instead of just having the answer?

Questions parents ask

+What's the difference between understanding something and just having the AI's answer?

Having the answer means it is written on your page. Understanding means the idea is in your head — you can explain it in your own words and do it again yourself, even without the AI. The honest question is always: can I explain it and redo it myself?

+How can I tell if I REALLY understand something?

Try three things: say it in your own words, redo the hard part without the AI, and answer a question about it. If you can do those, you understand it. If you can't, the honest answer is 'I don't understand it yet'.

+Why does pretending to understand hurt ME, not just other people?

Because pretending hides the gap. If you say 'I get it' when you don't, no one helps you learn the missing part — and the next time the AI isn't there, you'll be stuck. Being honest about what you don't understand yet is how you actually learn it.

+What age is this 'Honest About Understanding' lesson for?

It is a Stage 5 lesson for roughly age 11 — part of KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It builds on the earlier lesson about declaring what an AI did, and goes deeper: being honest with yourself about what you truly understand. It uses a story, sorting and decision games, with light reading.

+Is the lesson free?

Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
