That Voice Could Be Made
A machine can copy a voice so well it sounds like someone you know — so a familiar voice is not proof. Check before you trust.

The Voice on the Message
Kavi the owl plays a voice message. It sounds exactly like his best friend Pip: "Kavi, quick — tell me the door code!" Kavi almost answers. Then he stops. "Wait — a machine can copy a voice from an old recording. It sounds like Pip, but a voice that sounds right isn't proof." Kavi smiles. "I'll check first — I'll call Pip back on her real number before I trust a single word."
What your child will learn
A peek inside
Try this at home: Can a machine make a voice that sounds just like a real person you know?
Questions parents ask
+Can a machine really copy someone's voice?
Yes. A machine can learn the sound of a person's voice from a short recording and then make new speech that sounds just like them — even saying words the real person never said. That is why hearing a familiar voice is not proof of who is really speaking.
+How can a child check whether a voice is really the person?
Do not act on the voice alone. Call the person back on a number you already have saved, ask a question only the real person would know, or check with a trusted grown-up who is with them. A voice that sounds right can still be machine-made, so the check — not the sound — is the proof.
+What is a warning sign that a voice message might be fake?
It rushes you to act right now, it asks for a password or money, and it sounds very sure. Urgency plus a request for secrets is a red flag. A copied voice can sound exactly like someone you love, so slow down and check first.
