Kavi Asks the AI

Kavi the owl types into a drawing AI: "draw an animal." Up pops a grumpy grey fish — not what she wanted at all! Kavi giggles. "The AI only had my words to go on… I just wasn't clear!" She tries again: "draw one happy orange cat sitting on a blue rug." This time it's purr-fect. "When I say what, how many, and what it looks like," hoots Kavi, "the AI gets much closer to what I pictured!"

A peek inside

I typed "draw an animal" and got a random grey fish. How can I make my instruction clear?
The AI only had my words — and 'an animal' could be anything! I add details: what to make (a cat), how many (one), what colour (orange), and what it's doing (sitting). Now the AI has much more to go on.

Questions parents ask

+What is a clear instruction for an AI?

A clear instruction tells the AI exactly what you want. It says what to make, how many, and what it looks like — for example 'draw one green frog sitting on a red leaf' instead of just 'draw something'. The more details you add, the closer the AI gets to your idea.

+Why do clear instructions matter when you use AI?

Because the AI works from the words you give it, and it cannot read your mind. If you leave things out, it has to guess. If you ask for 'a picture', you might get anything. If you ask for 'one yellow school bus with the number 7 on the door', the AI has much more to go on. Clear instructions get you closer to what you pictured.

+What is prompting?

Prompting is the grown-up word for giving an AI tool instructions. A prompt is the message you type or say to tell the AI what you want. Learning to write a clear prompt is one of the most useful AI skills.
