How a Recommender Guesses
A recommender watches what you did before — what you watched, liked and tapped — then guesses what you'll like next.

Kavi and the Video App
Kavi the owl watches a video app. "Ooh — it keeps showing me owl videos!" she hoots. Then she works it out: "I watched lots of owl videos before, so the app noticed and guessed I'd like more!" The app can't read her mind — it only guesses from what she did before. "Clever," says Kavi, "but just a guess — it can be wrong!"

Questions parents ask
+How does a recommender guess what I'll like?
It looks at what you did before — the videos you watched, the songs you liked, the things you tapped — and finds more of the same kind. If you watched lots of dog videos, it guesses you'll like another dog video. It is making a guess from your past actions.
+Can a recommender read my mind?
No. It can only use clues you give it — what you watch, like and tap. It cannot know what you are thinking, dreaming or feeling inside. It just guesses from what you actually did.
+Why do I keep seeing the same kind of videos?
Because the recommender noticed you watched that kind before, so it keeps guessing you'll like more like it. The more you watch one topic, the more clues it has, so it shows you even more of it.
+Is a recommender always right?
No. It only makes a good guess — sometimes it guesses wrong, especially when it is new and has few clues, or when you suddenly like something different. A guess can miss.
