Kavi and the App That Knew Her Name

Kavi the owl opens a brand-new app. "Hello! I don't know you yet," it says. So Kavi types in her name. Now it beams: "Hi, Kavi!" "Whoa — how did it know my name?" she hoots. Then she grins. "Oh! It only knows it because I gave it that data." She asks it her best friend's name. The app has no idea. "Of course," says Kavi. "I never gave it that data — so it cannot know. A machine knows me only through my data."

A peek inside

I typed my name into a new app, so it says "Hi, Kavi!" How does the app know my name?
The app is not magic. It knows my name because I GAVE it that data — I typed it in. Without that data it would not know me at all.

Questions parents ask

+How does a machine or app know things about me?

Only through data. If you type your name, it knows your name. If you upload a photo, it has that photo. If you let it use your location, it can collect where you are. A machine is not magic — it knows about you only through the data it has.

+Can an app know something I never told it?

Only if it has data about it from somewhere — like your location if you allow it, or something another person shares. If it has no data about something, such as your pet's name, it cannot know it. Ask a grown-up to check what an app can collect.

+If a machine only knows my data, why does privacy matter?

Because YOU get to choose what data to give. If you keep private things — like your full name, home, school, or password — to yourself, you do not hand that data to the app or to strangers. Ask a grown-up before you share personal data or turn on things like location.
