The Old Answer

Kavi the owl asks a helper, "What is the tallest building in the world?" The helper answers fast and sure — but Kavi notices the page is from ten years ago. "Hmm — the tallest building can change, so an old page might be out of date. And who even said this?" Kavi smiles. "Two quick checks: is it current (the date), and is it real (the source)? Then I really know."

A peek inside

A webpage says 'this phone is the newest,' but the page is from 2019. How do I check if it's current?
The newest phone changes often, so I check the date. 2019 is years old — that answer is out of date. I look for a page from this year instead.

Questions parents ask

+Why should children check the date of an answer?

Because some facts change over time. Who won the latest match, the newest phone, the tallest building, or how many people live in a city can all change. An answer that was right years ago can be out of date today, so checking the date tells you whether it is still current.

+What does it mean to check the source?

It means finding out where the answer came from and whether that place is real and trustworthy — a reference book, an atlas, an official website, or a knowledgeable grown-up. An answer with no source at all might be made up, so you look for a real, trusted source before you trust it.

+What are the two checks before trusting an answer?

First, the date — is it current? Some facts change, so an old answer can be out of date. Second, the source — is it real? Find where it came from and make sure it is a trustworthy place, not just a guess with no source.
