Kavi Spots a Sneaky Opinion

Kavi the owl asks a helper about pandas. It answers: "Pandas live in China. Pandas eat bamboo. And pandas are the cutest animals in the world!" "Wait," hoots Kavi. "Living in China and eating bamboo — I can check those, so they're facts. But 'cutest'? That's what someone thinks — that's an opinion!" She grins. "Even a clever helper mixes facts and opinions. I'll tell them apart."

A peek inside

An AI says: 'A spider has 8 legs.' Is that a fact or an opinion?
Can I check it, and would everyone get the same answer? Yes — I can count a spider's legs, and a spider really does have 8. So it is something true for everyone.

Questions parents ask

+What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?

A fact is something you can check and that is true for everyone — like 'a bee has 6 legs'. An opinion is what someone thinks, likes, or feels — like 'bees are the best insects'. A fact can be shown true or false; an opinion can be different for each person.

+Why do AI answers mix facts and opinions?

An AI answer often sounds like one smooth block of text, but it can mix real facts with opinion words like 'best', 'prettiest', or 'most fun'. Those judgment words are a clue that part of the answer is an opinion, not a checkable fact.

+How can a child tell a fact from an opinion?

Ask: can I check this and would everyone get the same answer? If yes, it is a fact. If it is about what someone likes or thinks — and could be different for another person — it is an opinion. Judgment words like best, nicest, or worst usually signal an opinion.
