Kavi Feeds Two Machines

Kavi the owl sets up two guessing machines. Into the first she pours good data — lots of correct, checked, varied examples. Into the second she drops poor data — a few old pages with some made-up facts. She asks both the same question. The first gives a clear, right answer; the second gives a muddled, wrong one. "See?" hoots Kavi. "It's not the machine — it's where the data came from. Good examples in, better answers out!"

1Where the data comes from shapes the answerAn AI learns from its data — the examples it is shown. The SOURCE and quality of that data decides how good its answers are. Tap each side!
2Good data, or poor data? Here are the sources an AI could learn from. Put each one in the right box. Good data is correct, varied, trusted and fresh. Poor data is wrong, old, one-sided or made-up. Tap a box!
3Will its answers be good?Read where each AI got its data, then decide if its answers will be GOOD or POOR. Ask: is the data correct, varied, trusted and fresh? Pick, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside

An AI learned from lots of correct, varied facts from trusted sources. Will its answers be good?

Questions parents ask

+Why does it matter where an AI's data comes from?

An AI learns from its data — the examples it is shown. If that data comes from trusted, correct, varied and up-to-date sources, the AI learns a good pattern and gives better answers. If the data is one-sided, old or made-up, the AI learns a poor pattern and its answers get worse. Good examples in, better answers out.

+What is good data for an AI?

Good data is correct (checked facts, right labels), varied (many kinds and many trusted sources), up-to-date, and there is enough of it. An AI that learns from good data can answer more questions well.

+What is poor data for an AI?

Poor data is wrong or made-up, one-sided (only one kind or one view), out of date, or too little. An AI that learns from poor data gives poorer answers — people say 'garbage in, garbage out'.
