Kavi Teaches the App a Trick

Kavi the owl shows a photo app hundreds of cat pictures, each one labelled "cat". The app doesn't remember every photo — instead it notices what all cats have in common: pointy ears, whiskers, a tail. It saves those patterns. "That saved bundle of patterns," hoots Kavi, "is called a model — and now the app can spot a cat it has never seen before!"

A peek inside

In your own words — what is a model?
I show a machine lots of examples. It finds the patterns they share. It saves those patterns. That saved bundle of patterns is the model, and it uses them to guess about new things.

Questions parents ask

+What is a model in AI?

A model is the patterns a machine learned from lots of examples. You show the machine many examples — like thousands of labelled photos — it finds what they have in common, and it saves those patterns. The saved patterns are the model, and it uses them to guess about new things it has never seen.

+How does a machine make a model?

In three steps. First you show it many examples, usually with labels. Then it finds the patterns — the things the examples have in common. Then it saves those patterns. That saved thing is the model.

+Does a model keep a copy of every example?

No. A model does not store the examples like a photo album. It keeps the patterns it learned from them. That is why it can guess about a new thing it never saw before.

+Can a model get things wrong?

Yes. A model only knows the patterns from the examples it was shown. If you show it something very different from its examples — like a dog when it only ever saw cats — it can guess wrong.
