I know a model predicts; it doesn't understand.

Kavi Tricks the Word Machine

Kavi the owl types "The capital of France is ___" and the machine instantly answers "Paris". "Clever!" says her friend. But Kavi grins and types nonsense: "The blorp of a wug is ___" — and the machine confidently makes something up! "See?" hoots Kavi. "It never understood the question. It just predicted the likely next word from patterns — sometimes right, sometimes made-up. Predicting is not understanding!"

What your child will learn

1Predicting is not understandingA model does ONE thing: it guesses the most likely next word or pixel from patterns. That is predicting. It never grasps meaning — that would be understanding. Tap each card!
2Predict like a model — no understanding neededYou can guess the likely next bit from a pattern WITHOUT understanding the meaning — just like a model. Pick, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.
3Predicting or understanding?A model can do the predicting jobs. The understanding jobs need a real mind — a model cannot do those. Sort each one into the right bin!

A peek inside

A model finishes "The capital of Japan is ___" with "Tokyo". Did it understand the question, or predict a likely word?
The model lined up the word that follows that pattern most often in its training text — 'Tokyo'. It got it right, but it never understood what a capital is. It predicted the likely next word.

Questions parents ask

+Does an AI model understand what it says?

No. A language model predicts the most likely next word, one word at a time, from patterns in the text it was trained on. It can write a smooth, correct-sounding sentence without understanding the meaning of a single word in it.

+What is the difference between predicting and understanding?

Predicting is guessing what probably comes next from patterns. Understanding is knowing what something means and why. A model only predicts — it lines up likely words or pixels. It never grasps meaning, feels, or checks whether what it says is actually true.

+If AI doesn't understand, how can its answers sound so good?

Because it learned from a huge amount of human writing, so the likely next word is usually a sensible one. Sounding right is not the same as being right or understanding — that is why a model can state a wrong fact in a perfectly confident sentence.

+How does an AI make a picture if it doesn't understand it?

The same way it makes words — it predicts likely pixels, bit by bit, from patterns of images it saw. It can draw a convincing dog without knowing what a dog is, what it feels like to pet one, or that dogs are alive.

+What age is this 'Predicts, Doesn't Understand' lesson for?

It is a Stage 4 lesson for roughly ages 9–10 in KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It uses a story, prediction games and sorting, with reading.

+Is the lesson free?

Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
