Kavi and the Clumsy Robot

Kavi the owl is steering a little toy robot when it bumps a cup off the table — crash! "Bad robot!" shouts her friend. Kavi shakes her head. "The robot didn't choose to do that — it only followed where I steered. You can't blame a machine; it just follows steps." She picks up the pieces. "I was steering, so I'm responsible. Only persons can be blamed... or praised. A machine never can!"

A peek inside

A robot vacuum bumps the dog's bowl and spills it. Someone shouts "Bad robot!" Is that fair?
A machine can't choose — it just follows its steps. It can't be blamed or praised. A person set it going, and a person can clean up. Only a person is responsible.

Questions parents ask

+Can a machine be blamed or praised?

No. A machine just follows the steps people gave it — it does not choose. Because it cannot choose, it cannot be blamed when something goes wrong or praised when something goes right. Only a person, who makes real choices, can carry responsibility.

+If a robot breaks something, who is responsible?

A person — the one who built it, set it going, or was using it. The robot only followed its steps; it had no choice. Responsibility always traces back to a person, never to the machine.

+Why is 'only persons are responsible' an AI-literacy idea?

Children will use apps, robots and chatbots that act in the world. It is important they learn a machine can never be the one to blame or praise — the people who make and use it are responsible. This helps them stay honest and not hide behind 'the machine did it'.

+What age is this lesson for?

It is a Stage 4 lesson for roughly ages 8–9 in KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It builds on earlier ideas that machines are made things that just follow steps and have no conscience, and uses a story, sorting and reasoning games with light reading.

+Is the lesson free?

Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
