Feed a machine new examples and it gives new answers — it changes with its data!

Kavi Changes Her Machine's Mind
Kavi the owl holds up a 🔴 red card. Her machine answers: "STOP!" — because she only ever fed it red STOP cards. Then Kavi adds a big pile of new 🟢 green GO cards. She holds up a 🟢 green card. The machine answers: "GO!" Kavi beams. "Same machine — but I gave it new data, so now it gives a new answer. It changed with its data!"

A peek inside
Try this at home: What makes a machine give a new answer?
Questions parents ask
+How does new data change a machine's answers?
A machine learns a pattern from its examples. When you add new examples, it learns a new pattern — so it can give a different answer to the same thing. New data in means the answers can change.
+Will a machine's answer change if you give it the same data again?
No. The same examples give the same pattern, so the answers stay the same. Only new or different data can change what a machine answers.
+Can a machine that got something wrong learn to get it right?
Yes. If a machine called a dog a 'cat' because it only saw cats, adding lots of dog photos gives it new data — and its answer for a dog can change to 'dog'.
