No Body, No Life
A machine has no body and no life — it is not born and it does not grow.

Kavi and the Little Robot
Kavi the owl's little robot beeps and rolls across the room. "Is my robot alive, like me?" she wonders. She looks at her sunflower — it started as a tiny seed and now it's taller than her! Then she looks at the robot. "It's the same size it was the day it was built. It was never born, and it doesn't grow." Kavi smiles. "My robot is a machine — it has no body and no life. Only living things are born and grow!"
What your child will learn
A peek inside
Try this at home: What are two clues that something is alive?
Questions parents ask
+Is a machine alive?
No. A living thing is born, grows bigger over time, and needs food and water. A machine is built by people, stays the same size, and runs on power, not food. So a robot or a phone is not alive, even when it moves or talks.
+How can a child tell if something is alive or a machine?
Ask: was it born and does it grow? A kitten was born tiny and grows into a cat — alive. A car was built in a factory and is the same size next year — a machine. Growing and being born are big clues that something is alive.
+Why does a robot seem alive if it moves and talks?
Moving or talking does not make something alive. A machine can be built to move and make sounds, but it still was not born and does not grow. Only living things are born, grow, and need food and water.
