Kavi and the Spelling Test

At home, Kavi the owl practises spelling and taps the spell-checker to fix mistakes. "Good — it helps me learn!" But the next day, during the spelling test, Kavi reaches for the spell-checker again… then stops. "Wait — this is my turn to show what I know. Letting the tool spell for me now would be cheating." Kavi does the test on her own. "Same tool — but fine to learn with, cheating to hide behind!"

A peek inside

I added the numbers in my head, then used a 🧮 calculator to check. Fine or cheating?
Is it my turn to show what I know? Yes — and I did it. The tool only checked my own work.

💬

Questions parents ask

+When is using a tool fine, and when is it cheating?

Using a tool to help you learn or to check your own work — a calculator, spell-checker or AI helper, when it is allowed — is fine. It is cheating when the tool does your turn for you (like answering a test you are supposed to do yourself) or when you hide that you used it. A simple test for kids: 'Is it my turn to show what I know, or is the tool just helping me learn?'

+Is using a calculator cheating?

Not usually. A calculator is fine when it is allowed and you still understand the maths. It becomes cheating only when your teacher asked you to work it out yourself and you let the calculator do that turn instead. The same rule fits an AI helper.

+What age is this 'Fine or Cheating?' lesson for?

It is a Stage 3 lesson for roughly ages 8–9 — part of KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It uses a story, sorting and decision games with light reading.

+Why teach fair tool-use as AI literacy?

AI helpers can do a child's whole task in a second. Children need an early, clear rule for when that help is fair and when it crosses into cheating, so they keep learning and stay honest about what they really did.

+Is the lesson free?

Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
