Kavi and the Helper

Kavi the owl asks the machine, "Find me three pictures of owls!" — and it does. "Good helper!" she hoots. Then a game beeps: "You are bad at this." Kavi tilts her head. "A machine can do a job I ask... but it does not get to decide if I am good or bad." She smiles. "It is my helper — not my friend and not my judge. I decide, and I direct it!"

A peek inside

I asked the machine to find three owl pictures, and it did. Is it being my helper or my judge?
I directed it to do a job, and it did the job. It did not decide if I am good or bad — it just helped.

Try this at home: A machine is a ____ I direct — not my friend and not my judge.

Questions parents ask

+Why teach children that a machine is a helper, not a judge?

As kids start using AI helpers, they need to know the machine does the jobs they direct — find, sort, suggest, add — but it does not decide if they are good or bad, smart or kind. Those judgements belong to the child and the people who love them. Naming the machine as 'a helper I direct, not my judge' keeps the child in charge.

+Can a machine decide if I am good or bad?

No. A machine can finish a job you ask for, but it cannot judge who you are. If a game says 'you are bad at this,' that is just the game — it is not the truth about you. Only you and the people who care about you really know you.

+What age is this 'Helper, Not Judge' lesson for?

It is a Stage 3 lesson for roughly ages 7–8 — part of KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It uses a story and sorting games with a little more reading than the earlier stages.

+Do I have to do what a machine suggests?

No. A helper gives you ideas, but you are the boss. You can say yes or no and choose your own. You direct the machine — the machine does not direct you.

+Is the lesson free?

Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
