It Follows Steps
A machine does not decide. It just follows the steps a person gave it — one by one.

Kavi's Dancing Robot
Kavi the owl writes three steps on a card: clap 👏, spin 🔄, clap 👏. Kavi gives the card to a little toy robot 🤖 and presses start. The robot claps, spins, claps — exactly the steps on the card! "See?" hoots Kavi. "The robot did not think up a dance. I made the steps — it just follows them, one by one."
What your child will learn
A peek inside
Try this at home: Who makes the steps a machine follows — the machine, or a person?
Questions parents ask
+Does a machine think for itself?
No. A machine has no ideas of its own. A person writes the steps and the machine just does them, one by one, in order. It only does what people told it to do.
+What is a 'step' for a machine?
A step is one small instruction, like 'turn on the light' or 'move forward'. People put the steps in order, and the machine follows them from first to last — the same way every time.
+Can a machine change the steps on its own?
No. If nobody changes the steps, the machine keeps doing the same steps the same way. To make it act differently, a person has to change the steps.
