Kavi's Listening Box

Kavi the owl holds up a little listening box 📦 with a screen. "Watch this!" hoots Kavi, and says out loud: "hello!" 🗣️ The box listens 👂 and the word hello pops up on the screen 📝! "It can hear me!" laughs Kavi. "Well — it caught the sounds and guessed the word. A machine can guess the words it hears, but it does not understand them like you and me."

What your child will learn

1Who really understands? You say a word and the listening box 📦 shows it on a screen. But is that the same as YOU listening? Tap each card to see!
2How a listening machine worksA listening box does the same four steps every time. Tap each step to hear it!
3A word, or just a noise?A listening machine guesses words. A clap or a bark is a sound, but it is not a word — so the machine has no word to show. Tap the right box for each one!
4What word will it guess?A person says a word into the box. YOU predict the word it shows — then tap to check. A clear word is easy to guess; a mumble is hard! Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside

I say "hello" 🗣️ into the listening box. What does it show on the screen?
The box catches the sounds of my word and guesses which word they make. The word is hello.

Try this at home: I say "dog" 🗣️ into the listening box. What does it do with my word?

Questions parents ask

+How does a machine 'hear' words?

A listening machine picks up the sounds of your voice and turns them into written words. It does not truly understand them like you do — it matches the sounds to words it has learned and makes a smart guess.

+Does a voice machine understand what I mean?

No. It can guess the words you said and show them on a screen, but it does not understand the meaning the way a person does. Knowing that a machine guesses words (instead of truly understanding) is an important early AI-literacy idea.

+Why does a voice helper sometimes get my words wrong?

Because it is guessing from the sounds it hears. If you speak softly, too fast, or far away, the sounds are harder to catch — so the machine's guess can be wrong, just like a person can mishear.
