A Tool Like a Spoon
A machine is a tool I use — just like a spoon or a crayon. I use it; it doesn't use me.

Kavi's Tool Box
Kavi the owl opens a little tool box. There is a spoon 🥄 for eating, a crayon 🖍️ for drawing, and a shiny tablet 📱 for a game. "I pick each one up and I use it," hoots Kavi. "The tablet is a machine — but it is a tool too, just like the spoon!" Kavi grins: "I am the boss. I use the tool — the tool does not use me!"

Questions parents ask
+Why teach children that a machine is a tool?
Before kids can understand AI, they need the idea that a machine — a tablet, a computer, a calculator — is a tool they use, just like a spoon or a crayon. The child is the boss: you pick it up and decide what to do, and the tool waits for you. This keeps kids in charge of the machine, not the other way around.
+Does a machine use me, or do I use the machine?
You use the machine. You turn it on and tell it what to do, so you are the boss — just like with a spoon or a crayon. A machine can move, light up and beep, but it still waits for a person to use it. 'I use the tool; the tool doesn't use me.'
+What age is this 'A Tool Like a Spoon' lesson for?
It is a Stage 2 lesson for roughly ages 6–7 — part of KAVI Academy's AI-literacy track. It uses a story and sorting games, with very little reading required.
+How is naming a machine as a tool part of AI literacy?
Seeing a machine as a tool you use — not a living thing and not your boss — is the foundation for understanding AI. It frames every AI helper as a tool the child controls, which supports safe, confident use later on.
+Is the lesson free?
Yes — this overview and the printable PDF handout are free. The full interactive lesson and the endless practice are part of KAVI Academy.
